What Is a Crown?
A crown is a tooth-shaped shell of porcelain that is designed to fit right over the top of your own tooth all the way down to the gumline. You may have also heard crown referred to as “caps” since they act like covers.
In the past, crowns were made of metal. You might remember seeing silver teeth in the smiles of your older relatives and depending on your age, you might have a silver crown yourself. Today’s crowns, however, are made using newer techniques and the crowns are so lifelike that once they are placed, they typically can’t be distinguished from natural teeth. And that’s just the way we like it!
Why Would We Use a Crown?

Is It Hard to Get a Crown?
Getting crowns at our Arvada dental office is a simple process. Once you and Dr. Lindsay Compton determine that a crown is the right treatment for your concern, we’ll numb your tooth and then shape it for the crown. This is done to remove the damaged areas so you can have a fresh start and also make sure that the crown will fit properly between your other teeth. We’ll take impressions and photos. These will be sent, along with Dr. Compton's specific instructions, to a lab we trust to create our restorations. We’ll place a temporary crown over your tooth to protect it since it will probably be sensitive.
As soon as your crown comes back from the lab, we’ll call you up so that you can return to our office. You and Dr. Compton will check the fit of the crown and, if you are both happy, your crown will be bonded into place. One last check for proper fit and you will be on your way!
